It’s no secret that the Flyers have struggled this season against the boys in blue. Coming into Saturday’s contest against the Rangers, the Flyers had lost all four meetings this season.   The boys looked to carry the momentum from a 4-3 win Thursday night into today’s tilt. Unfortunately the Rangers dominated, yet again, and downed the flailing Flyers, 5-2.

Well, where the hell do I start?

Honestly, it never really got going for the Flyers.  They played from behind right from the get go.  Midway through the first stanza, tough guy, and out of control extraordinaire, Tom Sestito gave the Rangers a power play.  They cashed in with a tally by captain Ryan Callahan, who would tally twice more, and never looked back. Callahan has two career hat-tricks. Both against the orange and black. The Rangers are now 5-0 against the Flyers this season, and the Bullies (HA!) have only one shot left at redemption before time runs out.

Ok, so this is a game review, right?

Well, here is my game review....

OUR DEFENSE SUCKS! And offensively talented teams like the Rangers continue to exploit it.

Now I’m sure you are all aware that GM Paul Holmgren is in the market for a top 4 defenseman that can clear the porch.  Guess what? So is the rest of the NHL world.  That makes it a sellers market against the Flyers.  To make matters worse, it already was leaning towards being a sellers market.  So panicking now and making a move might be the worst thing the Flyers GM could do.

I think Homer is smart enough that he won’t mortgage the future to bring a top 4 d-man.  Hell, I’m not even sure a defenseman will make this team a cup contender.  I think there are far too many issues that need addressed.   I would hate to see us deal off a top prospect, only to be another first round exit.  Just doesn’t make sense.

Ok, ok. I know I got off on a tangent there.  Let’s reel it back in.

I couldn’t have been more disgusted with the outcome today.  Every last cell in my body hates the New York Rangers.  When I think of their team, to me Brandon Dubinsky’s weasley, red faced, big nosed, ugly mug is the face of their franchise.  I relish in their misery,  But the fact remains, they are a damn good team.  I would be remiss if I didn’t give them their just desserts, and tip my cap.  So…..there that is.

WARNING: If you drink the orange and black kool-aid, go ahead and click the button at the top and close this window. For those of you who want a little reality check, keep reading…I will forewarn you, hopefully this is the reason you love us here at the O&BP, but I am about to get really fan biased, and pissed off at that, here. Oh, and I’ve had a few beers…..here goes…

This team has overachieved thus far.  Not a big secret.  I think we can all agree on that.  But in all honesty, this has pulled the wool over our collective eyes, myself included.  Lest we forget that in actuality, this was a “rebuilding year”.  Sometimes there are growing pains that accompany this.  We have been impervious to this because the Flyers have overachieved this season.

I have said it since day one, that this team is 2-3 years from a cup.  And, now, more than ever I think we are seeing that as a reality.  The main problem I see is defense (thank you captain obvious).  And that isn’t going to be fixed in one, or even two, moves at the deadline.  I think it needs to be a work in progress. Sell off a few high priced pieces at the deadline, and put yourself in position to ink the Ryan Suters of the world this coming off-season.

For those of you who are still reading…...anybody? Ok, I see one guy way in the back…

I know we are currently in fourth position in the Eastern Conference, but that position is quite tumultuous. One or two more losses in a row and the Flyers could see themselves on the outside looking in.  I know it sounds crazy, but I definitely think Homer should be looking to sell first, rather than buy at the NHL trade deadline.

Now, since I have lost everyone along the way, I will go ahead and thank you for reading my buzzed drivel.  Back to your Saturday events.  May your day get better than it has been thus far.

Until next time,

LETS GO FLYERS!!!!! Please. I said please….
