Jinxes, Shminxes; "SHUTOUT!"

Can we stop with the "WOAH, YOU JINXED THE SHUTOUT ARRGH!!" nonsense?

I've heard it for years -- You cannot jinx or even say the word "Shutout" when the goalie (You are rooting for) is pitching "The S word". My question, why?

I know about it in baseball. You can't say the words "No hitter" or "Perfect game" but I'm here to tell you, that, of course, is silly. I understand players don't want to talk to the pitcher when he's throwing a no hitter but Bill in Montana saying "Hey Honey, come watch this, Halladay has a no hitter!" and then Mrs Bill hitting Bill with a frying pan because he jinxed Roy? 

Don't you think 40,000 people in the stadium and the crew at ESPN interrupting their previous shows because of a no hitter, are jinxing the pitcher? Then he gets the No-No, then what? Armageddon? Nonsense.

I know we feel we have a certain power when it comes to our favorite teams. We feel we have a lucky shirt or sweater and we must wear it on game days because it will give Jaromir Jagr "Super goal scoring powers" if you wear it, or not. 

We feel that we have to sit perfectly still during the second period because the Flyers had a good first period. Trust me, if it was that easy to jinx a goalie, we'd do it every time a goalie has one against the Flyers. Nonsense.

I have seen it on the dreaded Flyers fanpage on Facebook; A fan says "Wow, we have a shutout going" and 8 people calling for the poster's head. Then, a shutout does end and fans blame the poster. They don't blame the defense breaking down, or the sniper going top shelf.

Nope.

They blame the Flyers fan saying the "S word". Would the jinx still work if I typed it in Swahili or does it have to be in english? Nonsense.

What happens if I "think" a shutout is happening? Then what? Do I blame my brain for jinxing it if he allows a puck past his guard? Do I bash my head with a mallet because....ya know, the brain is in the head. Nonsense.

The Flyers haven't won a Cup since '75, maybe I can blame all of you Non-Jinxers out there! I'm saying the Flyers win the Cup this year with Bryzgalov pitching a shutout in the Final's clincher...
