Flyers win but at what price?
With a little over two minutes to go in the 2nd period, the collective breath of every Flyers fan was held as the league leader in points, Claude Giroux, was kneed in the back of the head by teammate Wayne Simmonds. (Sharing the embedded code of the video was disabled, so please click the highlighted wording to watch the incident)
Claude, staggered to his skates and made it to the bench while every medical trainer on the Flyers staff chatted with him. G went to the quiet room where it was determined that the team was going to keep Claude from going back out. Nobody in the Wells Fargo Center felt worse than Wayne Simmonds at thatmoment.
Just after scoring his 7th goal of the year and giving the Flyers a 3-1 lead, it was quickly forgotten. After the game, General Manager Paul Holmgren said, "Claude is okay, just held out of the game for precautionary reasons."
No headaches or anything but as well all know, concussions can be very funny sometimes (Funny how? Like a clown funny?).
The team will know more Sunday after being examined by doctors. Can Shanny ban Evgeni Malkin for his near miss elbow? --
Ilya Bryzgalov suffered an injury as well. Ilya says it's an "Old boo boo incident" and when asked if he's day to day, he said "I'm hour to hour!" --
Okay, on to the game.
"OMG!! What are the Flyers going to do about the 1-3-1!!??"
They did nothing, well, they didn't stall anyway. Without former MVP Martin St Louis, the Lightning were playing short handed. The Flyers held Steven Stamkos (Owner of a hat trick against the Flyers last season in that 8-7 defensive struggle game) to without a point. Jaromir Jagr tied Brendan Shanahan for 11th place on the all time goals list. Next on that list is one-time LA Kings great Luc Robitaille (A guy who was selected BEHIND Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom Glavine in the 1984 NHL draft) for 10th place.
Jaromir is 12-goals behind Robitaille.
It will be real interesting if the Flyers sign Jaromir for another year or two. He's now 34 goals from catching his one-time teammate and Penguins Owner, Mario Lemieux.
Scott #HartnellDown potted the empty netter for his 5th goal in 5 games. The Hartnell Hate Train has officially left town......for the time being.
I'd like to point out how well rookies Marc Andre Bourdon and Kevin Marshall have played. Bourdon has logged some major minutes since Captain Pronger has been absent (Chris will meet with doctors in Pittsburgh on Wednesday to determine the extent of his concussion) Bourdon logged 15:18 of ice time in the game last night and Marshall (who bears a resemblance to Beatle Ringo Starr) was a +2.
Both will need to play their A-games in the future, especially if Prongs is out for a considerable amount of time. Kimmo is 36 and can't be playing 22-minutes a game in January and February and expect him to have gas in the tank come April and May.
The Flyers next opponent is the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. The future Conference rivals have had a hard time since Robin Williams... err Dale Hunter has taken over the reigns from Bruce Boudreau.
Hunter is 3-3 since taking over, and Captain Alex Ovechkin has struggled mightily as of late. Two goals in his last 14-games for the one time 65 goal scorer.
Lets hope we see both Claude and Ilya for that contest in our Nation's Capital.
